(01:43) World Nature Conservation Day is that yearly calendar guilt trip where we all pretend we just noticed trees exist and water isn't supposed to taste like regret. It's a polite reminder that nature doesn't need our opinions. It needs us to stop treating the planet like a disposable plate at a barbecue. (02:03) You're not being asked to hug a fern and chant. You're being asked to use less, less, waste less, and maybe think past next Tuesday for once. Consider it the opening bell for a season of uncomfortable truths, small fixes, and big talk from people who still can't find the recycling bin. (02:23) World Nature Conservation Day. Today on the National Day calendar, we celebrate National Soccer Day. National Soccer Day. Celebrate by jogging in circles, faking an injury, and calling it strategy, while the scoreboard stays stuck at 0-0 like a screensaver. I've never related more to anything in my life. (04:03) Yeah. It's that special little moment on the calendar where we all pretend we've been following the sport instead of just yelling at the TV like it owes us money. You lace up your optimism, salute the sacred shin guard, and watch grown adults sprint for 90 minutes while the scoreboard plays hard to guess. That's so true. (04:21) It's a holiday built on hope, hydration, and the eternal belief that this time the ref will see what you saw. Don't worry. Today's just the warm-up. The real bad decisions start when everybody starts acting like they could have gone pro. See, National Soccer Day. (04:39) I know some people enjoyed the World Cup this summer, and that's great. It's awesome that the U.S. got to host it. Myself, I didn't watch a single minute of it. I don't know the rules of the game. I don't know how many guys are supposed to be on the field. It's not something that was even played where I grew up. (04:57) Right? Really? I mean, when I was in high school, they finally started a high school team. That high school team's been around less than 20 years. It just wasn't a thing when we were kids, where I was from. (05:13) We played football, and we played baseball, and in the wintertime, you'd play basketball or you'd wrestle. But soccer was just not a thing. It was something you played recreationally at school, at recess or something like that, but there was no organized soccer leagues. (05:31) None of that stuff was a thing when I was growing up either. I remember the first time we had one here in Chalamar. I think it's Playground Area Soccer Association or something like that. (05:47) The kids didn't play, but now my grandkids play and they love it. Well, I mean, I know it's a super fast-growing sport here in the U.S. (06:03) Like I said, it just wasn't something that I was ever introduced to as a kid on an organized level. To me, it was kind of like hockey. I really don't even know the rules of hockey either. Now, I enjoy watching a hockey game, because to me I find it far more exciting than a soccer game. (06:21) Because to me, I find it far more exciting than a soccer game. Because you're waiting for a fight, man. Waiting for a fight. Who's going to get hit in the face with a stick? To me, there's some excitement there, but for soccer, I just don't have the attention span for it, I guess. (06:37) Yeah. It is what it is. Alright, we're going to take a break. Ew! You go for the thrill. You stay because you already paid $40 to rent a locker the size of a shoebox. Yeah, it's that annual moment when we all pretend a ground beef disc on a sponge bun is a cultural institution instead of a convenient way to eat with one hand and regret with the other. It's celebrated by restaurants slashing prices, people posting photos like they just discovered fire, and your arteries quietly filing a formal complaint. Somewhere, a grill gets lit, a cheese slice achieves its final form, and a pickle gets displaced like it owes somebody money. Don't worry, this isn't the punchline. It's the opening ceremony for a holiday built on beef, bargains, and bad decisions you'll defend with full confidence. (10:51) National Hamburger Day. Where do you get the best hamburgers? Or cheeseburger? Hamburger, cheeseburger, whichever. There's a couple go-tos here in Fort Walton that I love, right? For lunch, I love going to get a burger at Saks. I think they've got a great burger. But I would say my favorite burger in town, Craft Bar. That's me, too. I really believe that. And I don't know if it's the, you know, they also do those home fries. And the sea salt that they put on those fries, I don't know. To me, then that little rosemary ketchup that they give you to dip the fries. (11:31) I think they do a really good burger there. They do. You can't discount Topps. Topps has got great burgers. Yeah, I forget about Topps, just because it's kind of out of my way. But yeah, Topps has got great burgers. But I tell you, the best one that I've had is up off of, I believe it's Highway 87. There's a little place up there called the Oval Office. It's above the Speedway. Okay. And hands down the best burger I've ever had in my life. No kidding. Yep. Yep. (12:01) It is fantastic. I don't even know if it's still there. It's been a couple of years since we've been there. But they have, hands down to me, the best hamburger. It's a little bit greasy, but not too much. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding two 15-year-olds from Niceville. Deputies say the teens were last seen at a home on Yacht Club Drive in Niceville around 9 p.m. One of the missing teens, Aspen, has blonde hair and blue eyes. She's about 5'5 and 160 pounds. The other is Sydney Currant. (16:47) Has strawberry blonde hair and green eyes. She's about 5'6 and 150 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office at 850-651-7400 or contact Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers. But yeah, you got two young girls, 15 years old, from Niceville that are currently missing. So if anyone knows anything out there, please contact the local Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office with any information. Also, City of Fort Walton Beach has announced its free August large item pickup. City of Fort Walton is going to be offering free curbside collection of large household items through the month of August as part of its neighborhood cleanup program. Residential sanitation customers can place bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, appliances, and grills at the curb on their regular yard waste collection day without scheduling a special pickup. And the usual four cubic yard limit will be waived for the month. The program does not accept construction debris, concrete, bricks, glass, tires, or hazardous materials and is available only to residents within the city limits who receive city sanitation service. Non-profits, some churches, a couple of doctors, Miss Okaloosa team and Miss Niceville team. (30:55) They're going to come and we're just trying to give back, do what we can. We've got some school supplies, some backpacks we're giving away. A lot of information to help students with tutoring and some mentoring and mental health. (31:11) Kind of be like a resource fair, I guess, with some back-to-school supplies available as well. You've got a big event going on. 30 local businesses and organizations right here in town. You said you've got a couple of churches that are going to be there as well. Yes, yes, yes. (31:27) We've got some real estate offices that are going to be there as well. It's just a plethora of all kinds of organizations that have decided to come together and be in one central location to help the community out. (31:43) Is this the first time you've put something like this together? What kind of drove your passion to do this? No, it's not the first. I've been doing this for a couple of years at our lovely Santa Rosa Mall that no longer exists. (31:58) It's just tried to have grown year after year. When the mall no longer existed, I went to our famous Mr. Jason Davis, Fort Walton Beach City Manager. (32:15) I was at a meeting of his and just kind of explained to him what I've been doing over the years. He just graciously provided the rec center and was like, we want to be on board with this. This is exactly up his alley to help the community. And the event this coming Saturday, it's free, it's open to the public, and it's not just relegated to residents inside the city limits. Now, what are some of these resources that will be offered or showcased this weekend? (32:54) We have an organization that's called the Learning Lab, for example. This young lady actually teaches kids after school for tutoring to kind of help them get where they need to be if they're struggling in a particular subject. (33:09) We have a doctor who's over at New Hope Mental Wealth Awareness. She's actually going to be there to give families information about her services that she offers. And we've got some fraternities and sororities that are local in our area that give mentorship for young men and women. (33:29) So they're going to be there to offer their services. So it's a lot. A lot is available this weekend. All right. Well, it's all free and it's open to the public. It goes on at the Fort Walton Rec Center on Jet Drive from 10 to 2 this Saturday. And, Bobby, this last week, a big discussion between the Okaloosa County School District and the county commissioners regarding how the folks want to divvy up paying for school resource officers. (35:52) Yeah. Okaloosa County School District officials said on Monday that they have set aside $1.6 million in case the county asked the district to pay more for school resource officers and warned that the figure could climb to $4.4 million if the county ends its share of the program. (36:11) Now, this discussion came during the morning budget workshop less than a week after the county commissioners debated whether to keep funding half of the SRO program. During the July 21 workshop last week, commissioners voted 4-1 to hold the property tax millage rate steady after Chairman Trey Goodwin's motion to cut the county's SRO funding and lower the rate failed for a lack of a second. (36:37) Now, Chief Financial Officer Julie Perry told the board that she built $1.6 million into the proposed budget as part of a potential need for the SRO contract. She said she reached the figure by taking the cost of the contract, subtracting Safe Schools funding, and dividing the remainder in half, reflecting what the district would owe if the county treated Safe Schools money as separate and asked the district to cover half of the rest. (37:04) Now, the full contract cost about $8.8 million in this upcoming fiscal year, split into two halves of roughly $4.4 million. But the district covers its half with $2.7 million in the state's Safe Schools categorical funding and $1.5 million from its own operating budget and $200,000 from charter schools. (37:25) The county pays the other half. So much of the discussion centered on the Safe Schools funding, which commissioners cited on July 21 when suggesting the district's share of the SRO program cost had fallen below half, and Perry said that argument rests on a misunderstanding of how the money works. (37:45) So what exactly is the county going to use Safe Schools for? So the school district gets the Safe Schools funding, $2.7 million a year, right? The full contract for SRO officers in schools is $8.8 million. (38:04) They split it 4.4 between the commissioners and between the school board. Well, $2.7 of the $4.4 million that the school board is responsible for is covered by the Safe Schools funding. So the county commissioners are saying, well, they're only having to take $1.5 million out of their operating budget. (38:23) We're covering $4.4 million out of our operating budget to provide this service. So they don't like how they get the money? Yeah, they think they're not paying their fair share. (38:38) No, that's not how that works. I understand. Okay. But that's where their argument lies. So they are basically saying that $2.7 million needs to be factored into the $8.8 million, and then you split that down the middle, which would be about $3 million apiece. (39:03) Because you're getting something that I don't get. Exactly. Well, and guess what happens? Guess what's going to happen if the commissioners decide to not fund that? Well, school board's going to go back and probably raise millage on school tax next year. (39:20) Right? You're just going to rob Peter to pay Paul. Exactly. I mean, whatever. Yeah. It's just, again. I wonder if they could get a better rate going to local community police. (39:36) I don't know. I wonder. Hmm. Was that a thing before? Mm-hmm. When SRO officers first started, they came out of the cities around here. Well, there's no reason why they couldn't put an RFP back out for that, right? (39:53) Seems like it'd be interesting. Yeah.
