Emerald Coast Rodeo Returns In Early November

Get The Coast— The award-winning Emerald Coast Rodeo is returning to Northwest Florida State College’s Niceville campus for two nights on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7. Now in its fourth year, the event will feature professional rodeo competitions including bull riding, barrel racing and roping, along with Mutton Bustin’. The Professional Cowboys Association named the rodeo Best Rodeo in Its Division for 2025, recognizing its event production, community involvement and professional presentation. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., Mutton Bustin’ begins at 6:30 p.m., and the rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and increase to $25 during the week of the event, while children under 3 attend free. Organizers recommend purchasing tickets early, as the event sold out last year.

Destin Open House Featuring Fish Fry

Get The Coast— The City of Destin will host its annual free Open House from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Community Center on Stahlman Avenue. Residents are invited to meet City staff while enjoying a fish fry, live music, a caricature artist, a photo booth and other activities. This year’s event, themed “red, white & blessed (blue),” will celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary and provide an opportunity for the community to gather and connect with city representatives.

Convicted Man's Petition Over Niceville Murder Fails

MidBay News— Isaiah Lamar Luna, 23, one of the men convicted in connection with the 2022 double homicide at Niceville’s Oak Creek Shopping Plaza, has been unsuccessful in his attempt to obtain post-conviction relief. Luna, who is being held at Graceville Correctional Facility, filed a petition challenging his conviction, but the courts rejected the request. The killings, which involved Bryson Tyrese Mitchem and Brandon Dequan Jones, occurred during what police described as a drug deal that turned violent. Two other defendants, Brenden Jerroed Carson and Kaland Karon Jones, have not yet received final judgments, with Carson scheduled for a plea-status hearing in October and Jones set for a pretrial hearing in November.

TJ Maxx To Open Second Destin Location

The Destin Log— A second TJ Maxx location is coming to Okaloosa County this fall, with the new store opening in Destin’s Paradise Key shopping center. The retailer will take over the space formerly occupied by Stein Mart and JOANN Fabrics and Crafts, signaling another addition to the area’s shopping options. A TJ Maxx sign has already appeared in the building, offering an early indication that the discount department store is preparing to open its doors.

Two Arrested For Illegally Selling Insurance

Florida Voice— Florida regulators have ordered an immediate halt to an allegedly unlicensed insurance operation that targeted watersports and marine-livery businesses in the Destin area, while two Okaloosa County men have been arrested in connection with the case. According to state regulators, Christopher Jason Brossett and Brady Allen Howard operated under several business names, offered insurance quotes, collected premiums, issued policy documents and entered into insurance contracts without the required authorization. Officials allege the operation collected more than $100,000 in premiums and that the funds were diverted for personal use, while some claims reportedly went unpaid. Brossett was arrested in June on charges including grand theft and conducting insurance business without authorization, while Howard was arrested in July for allegedly conspiring with Brossett.

Crestview Mayor Speaks On Data Center Ban

WEAR TV3— The City of Crestview voted unanimously on Sept. 28 to prohibit large-scale data centers within city limits, citing concerns about their potential impact on local infrastructure and resources. Mayor J.B. Whitten described the decision as a cautious approach while the city learns more about the technology and its potential effects, noting that data centers could generate revenue but may not create a large number of jobs. Whitten also said the ordinance could be reversed in the future if additional information changes the city’s position, emphasizing that the council is responding to concerns raised by residents. The ban follows similar actions in Escambia and Walton counties, while Okaloosa County has chosen to regulate rather than prohibit data centers.
