Destin Seeks Temporary Moratorium On Data Centers

Get The Coast— The Destin City Council voted unanimously, 7-0, to have an ordinance drafted that would temporarily prohibit data centers within the city while officials conduct additional research and monitor developments in the Florida Legislature. The proposal, introduced by Councilman Kevin Schmidt and supported by Councilwoman Sandy Trammell, follows Okaloosa County commissioners’ recent rejection of a proposed 12-month moratorium. City Attorney Kim Kopp explained that the moratorium would remain temporary while studies and reviews are conducted, with the council able to establish a specific time frame when the ordinance returns for consideration. Although Councilman Dewey Destin questioned the need for the measure because he believes there is currently no suitable property for a data center in Destin, he supported the motion. The ordinance will be brought back to the council for further consideration at a future meeting.

Mayor Wagner Of Destin Out As President Of NWFL League Of Cities

WEAR TV3— Destin Mayor Bobby Wagner resigned as president of the Northwest Florida League of Cities following an emergency vote by the organization’s board on September 23, 2026. According to WEAR-TV, a source said board members raised concerns about Wagner’s conduct during government meetings in his role as mayor. Wagner had been serving as president of the regional organization, which represents municipalities across Northwest Florida. The news station reported that it had contacted Wagner for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication. Despite stepping down as president, Wagner remained listed as a director on the Northwest Florida League of Cities’ website.

Body Found Inside Burned Vehicle Near Eglin AFB

Get The Coast— A routine patrol by the 96th Security Forces Squadron discovered a burned vehicle containing a deceased person early Wednesday morning on Eglin Air Force Base. The vehicle was found around 4:30 a.m. near Range Road 234 and Lewis Turner Boulevard. Officials have not released the identity of the deceased, and the process of notifying the person’s next of kin is underway. The U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, while base officials are asking the public to refrain from speculation as the investigation continues.

Concrete Deck Is Now Complete On Westbound Side Of New Brooks Bridge

Get The Coast— Construction crews have completed pouring the concrete deck for the new westbound Brooks Bridge, marking a significant milestone in the bridge replacement project. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, much of the concrete work was completed overnight to help ensure proper curing in cooler temperatures. Crews will now focus on finishing the remaining bridge components, connecting the roadway, and installing barriers, drainage, lighting, and other features needed before the bridge can open to traffic. FDOT has not announced a specific date for the traffic shift, although a previous project update indicated it could occur in September or October. The $171 million Brooks Bridge replacement project will ultimately provide two new parallel bridges with six travel lanes, wider shoulders, and improved facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, with overall completion scheduled for early 2029.

Repaving Of 85 Continues In South Okaloosa

Get The Coast— Paving is underway along Eglin Parkway as the Florida Department of Transportation advances its $11.6 million resurfacing project on State Road 85 between U.S. 98 and Richbourg Avenue. Crews are primarily working at night to limit disruptions to daytime traffic, though drivers should expect temporary lane closures, reduced speeds, and construction vehicles in the area. In addition to new pavement, the project includes improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, updated signage, and other roadway upgrades. The project, which was announced in May 2024, is expected to be completed by late 2027.

Navarre Press— The Navarre Beach Fire District discovered a financial emergency in late April and has since secured a $300,000 line of credit, raised fire assessment rates and cut costs. The district redesigned its website this summer as part of efforts to improve efficiency and transparency.
