County Orders Hollywood Blvd Cameras To Be Removed

Get The Coast— Okaloosa County commissioners unanimously voted to have two school-zone speed cameras removed from Hollywood Boulevard in Fort Walton Beach after a title search confirmed that the roadway is located within county-owned right-of-way. The county said it had not issued permits for the cameras and directed staff to give the city one working week to remove them. Commissioners also authorized negotiations to potentially transfer ownership of the roadway to the City of Fort Walton Beach, provided the agreement includes a legally enforceable restriction permanently prohibiting speed cameras, along with maintenance requirements. The title search found that ownership of Hollywood Boulevard varies along different sections of the road, with both the county and city holding rights in certain areas. The cameras had already been turned off, and the county continues to seek clarification regarding fines previously issued, while the city had previously declined a broader request to refund those payments.

5K Benefit Returns To Crestview

Get The Coast— The Costume Chaos 5K is returning to Crestview on October 3, with Communities Against Cancer dedicating this year’s event to supporting four local families affected by cancer. The 5K run and walk will begin at 8 a.m. at 3059 Adora Teal Way, with registration costing $35. The event follows last year’s successful fundraiser, which helped a local toddler who has since become cancer-free. This year, proceeds will assist Ella Grace Atkins, a baby undergoing treatment for eye cancer; 17-year-old Wyatt Moore, who is battling bone cancer; Nicole Bailey, a mother of three facing breast cancer; and the family of Shonda Luke, a beloved Crestview teacher who recently died from ovarian cancer. Organizers hope the event will ease some of the financial challenges these families are experiencing while bringing the community together to show support and raise awareness about childhood and other forms of cancer.

FWB Doctor Pays Over $300K In Illegal Opioid Prescribing

WJHG 7— According to federal officials, Fort Walton Beach gastroenterologist Dr. Twan Phanijphand has agreed to pay $300,000 to resolve allegations that he improperly prescribed opioids and other controlled substances in violation of the Controlled Substances Act. As part of the civil settlement, prosecutors said Phanijphand also agreed not to seek a new Drug Enforcement Administration registration for certain Schedule II and IIN controlled substances and will be subject to additional DEA monitoring. Officials emphasized that the settlement does not constitute an admission of liability by Phanijphand, nor does it represent an acknowledgment by the government that its allegations were unfounded.

Two Arrested In Connection With Auto Burglaries

WEAR TV3— Two people have been arrested following an investigation into a series of vehicle burglaries in the Mary Esther and Fort Walton Beach areas. According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received information on September 19 about 27-year-old Phoenix Wendall Jordan, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants and was reportedly staying at a home in Mary Esther. During a search of his bedroom, investigators found more than 20 pieces of evidence, including a firearm reported stolen in a vehicle burglary and an identification card belonging to another victim. Authorities said Jordan admitted to burglarizing about 50 vehicles and told investigators that stolen credit cards were given to his former girlfriend, 25-year-old Breanna Flynn of Destin, who allegedly used them at local businesses. Flynn, who also had active felony warrants, was arrested and faces multiple charges, while Jordan was charged in connection with the vehicle burglaries and stolen firearm. The investigation remains ongoing.

OCSD Earns 'A' Rating

Okaloosa County School District— The Okaloosa County School District has received an “A” rating from the Florida Department of Education for the 2025–2026 school year, continuing a streak of earning the state’s highest rating every year since 2014. The district reported improvements in 10 of 12 academic categories and moved from 11th to 8th statewide based on its analysis of accountability results. Overall, 23 district schools earned an “A,” while 10 received a “B” and four received a “C,” with 89% of schools earning an A or B. The district also reported gains in middle school acceleration, social studies and science performance, as well as an increase in the graduation rate from 88% to 91%. District officials credited students, educators, staff, families and community partners for the results and said future efforts will focus on strengthening English language arts and math, providing targeted student support and expanding access to advanced coursework.
