Second Destin Councilman Arrested In Last Two Months

WEAR TV3— Destin City Councilman Rodney Braden, 64, was arrested in Okaloosa County on a third-degree felony charge of grand theft involving between $10,000 and $20,000. Braden was released from jail after posting bond, but authorities have not yet released details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The State Attorney’s Office has been contacted for additional information, while Braden has not responded to requests for comment. The City of Destin said it would allow the legal process to proceed without commenting while the case is active. Braden previously served on the Destin City Council from 2014 to 2021, ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2022, and was elected to the council again in November 2024.

Former Deputy's Manslaughter Trial Begins Late This Month

ABC13 Panama City— Body camera footage shows former Okaloosa County Deputy Eddie Duran firing at Roger Fortson and then instructing him to put down his gun, resulting in Fortson’s death. Duran’s attorneys filed a motion seeking to have the charges dismissed, arguing that he believed Fortson was about to shoot him and that he should therefore be protected from prosecution under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. However, a judge denied the motion on Friday. Duran’s attorneys filed an appeal on Monday, and another hearing is scheduled for September 22, with the trial set to begin September 28.

Angel Tree Program Now Known As Operation Jingle Bells

Okaloosa County School District— The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Okaloosa County School District are bringing back their annual holiday assistance program, formerly known as Angel Tree, under the new name Operation Jingle Bells. The program supports students and families experiencing financial difficulties by having school counselors and school resource officers identify students in need and create holiday wish lists that are then shared with community members who want to help. The program will officially launch for the holiday season in October, when additional information will be provided about how local businesses, organizations, and individuals can participate. Although the program has a new name, its goal remains the same: bringing the community together to help make the holidays brighter for Okaloosa County students.

FL Average Gas Prices Soars To $4.20 Per Gallon

WEAR TV3— Gas prices in the Pensacola area have climbed to slightly above $4 per gallon, marking their highest level in about four years, while the statewide Florida average is approaching $4.20 per gallon. The increase has pushed prices across the Panhandle higher, adding to costs for drivers throughout the region.
