Destin Council Passes E-Bike Safety Ordinance

Get The Coast— The Destin City Council unanimously voted 7-0 to approve an e-bike and motorized scooter safety ordinance on its first reading following 18 months of research and development. The proposed rules establish operating and parking requirements for electric bicycles, scooters, and other micromobility devices, including restrictions on carrying additional passengers, using cellphones or earbuds while riding, and traveling at unsafe speeds. Riders must yield to pedestrians, provide an audible warning when passing, and those 16 and younger must wear helmets. The ordinance also requires e-bike and scooter users to travel in the same direction as vehicle traffic when riding on sidewalks that are present on both sides of a road, while prohibiting modifications that increase a device's designed maximum speed. Violations would result in a written warning for a first offense, followed by fines of $150, $350, and $500 for subsequent offenses. The ordinance will return to the council for a second reading, while city officials also plan to focus on public education through schools, businesses, churches, and youth organizations.

Arts And Education Center Opens In Downtown Crestview With EFCU Support

Get The Coast— The Eglin Federal Credit Union Arts and Education Center has officially opened in downtown Crestview following a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by community leaders, credit union representatives, and local residents. Located at 189 N. Main St., the 3,000-square-foot facility is designed to provide residents of all ages with access to programs in visual arts, music, theater, dance, tutoring, financial education, STEM, and other educational activities. The center will also host performances, family activities, and civic events while creating opportunities for local artists, educators, and community leaders to share their skills. Officials said the facility is especially intended to support youth and families who may have limited access to these resources, while also bringing additional activity and foot traffic to downtown businesses. The center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with additional weekend hours for select programs and events.

Tuesday Afternoon Shooting In Fort Walton Beach

WEAR TV3— A person was hospitalized following a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon outside apartment buildings near Rickey Avenue and David Street in Fort Walton Beach. According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at approximately 1:30 p.m., and the injured individual was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office or Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers. Officials said additional information would be released as it becomes available.

New Signs Coming To Convention Center And Rigdon Center

WKRG TV— Okaloosa County has begun replacing outdated signs at two government facilities with new digital signage. According to the Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners, crews started removing the existing signs at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center and the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Rigdon Center on Monday, Sept. 14, as part of the effort to modernize the signs at these locations.

Niceville PD Searching For Missing At-Risk Man

MidBay News— The Niceville Police Department is asking the public for help locating 19-year-old Parker Gabriel Thompson, who has been reported missing and considered at risk. Police said Thompson was last seen near Chimney Rock Circle, where security footage around 9:01 a.m. showed him leaving his driveway and getting into a gray or blue SUV that then departed the area. Authorities have not identified the vehicle’s make, model, or license plate. Thompson is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with light brown shoulder-length hair and hazel eyes; he was last seen wearing a blue Adidas shirt, light gray shorts, black Nike shoes, a black baseball cap, and rectangular glasses while carrying a small black-and-gray bag. Anyone with information about his whereabouts or the vehicle is asked to contact the Niceville Police Department at 850-729-4030.

The premise is simple: you wander outside, pocket a few rocks like you’re eight years old or laundering evidence, and call it “celebrating nature” with a straight face. People pretend it’s about mindfulness, geology, and appreciating the little things, but mostly it’s an excuse to hoard pebbles in jars and feel productive without anyone asking what your five-year plan is. And honestly, in a world on fire, taking a quiet walk to collect the oldest objects you’ll ever own isn’t the worst coping mechanism we’ve put on the calendar.
