FWB Council Meetings Recap

Get The CoastThe Fort Walton Beach City Council postponed final consideration of an ordinance regulating outdoor cottage food stands until October 13, with the decision intended to allow additional time for public input and discussion. During yesterday’s special meeting, three agenda items were also removed following a motion by Councilman Logan Browning, seconded by Councilman Bryce Jeter. Following the removal of those items, Councilman Payne Walker left the meeting shortly afterward. The council also discussed the future of the downtown library after Councilwoman Gloria Deberry made a motion to explore selling the existing library property and constructing a new facility at the Tennis Center. The motion was seconded to allow discussion, but ultimately failed when put to a vote. The cottage food ordinance would establish regulations for outdoor stands operated by home-based cottage food businesses, including limits on stand size, operating hours, property setbacks, parking, and city approval. The council’s decision to delay the ordinance reflects ongoing discussion over how the proposed rules should be structured and how state law may affect the city’s authority to regulate cottage food operations.

FL Attorney General's Father To Be Honored At FWBHS Football Game

Get The CoastFort Walton Beach High School will honor Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and his father, John “Billy” Uthmeier, during Friday night’s football game against South Walton High School, where the two will serve as honorary captains and be recognized during halftime. The ceremony will highlight Billy Uthmeier’s efforts to help bring an on-campus baseball field to FWBHS in 2004, ending decades of Vikings baseball teams having to play home games at Jet Stadium, as well as James Uthmeier’s accomplishments in law and public service. A former FWBHS student-athlete who played baseball and competed in cross country, James Uthmeier went on to become Florida’s Attorney General after serving in several prominent legal and government roles. School officials said the recognition celebrates the Uthmeiers’ contributions to the school and community while highlighting the lasting tradition of Viking graduates making an impact beyond Fort Walton Beach. Alumni who attended school with James Uthmeier are also being encouraged to attend Friday’s game and reconnect with their former classmate, which kicks off at 7 p.m.

Walton County To Remove Flock Cameras From Unincorporated Areas

The Destin LogThe Walton County Commission has decided against moving forward with Flock Safety license-plate reader cameras, citing concerns about privacy and how the technology could affect residents and visitors. The cameras are designed to capture vehicle license plates and other identifying information to help law enforcement investigate crimes, but commissioners expressed reservations about the amount of data collected, how long it could be retained, and who might have access to it. The discussion comes as communities across Florida consider expanding the use of automated license-plate readers, with supporters emphasizing their value in solving crimes while opponents warn that widespread surveillance could infringe on individual privacy. Walton County commissioners ultimately determined that the potential privacy implications outweighed the benefits of installing the Flock system at this time.

Secret Service Aware Of Iranian Threats On Barron Trump

PoliticoThe U.S. Secret Service is investigating an apparent threat against Barron Trump, the youngest son of President Donald Trump, after Iranian state media broadcast a disturbing segment that reportedly displayed an English-language graphic asking where Barron could be killed and referenced a $10 million reward. The broadcast identified Barron as a “target” and cited locations associated with him, including Trump Tower and an address linked to New York University, where he is reportedly a student. A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed the agency is aware of the video and said it investigates anything that could be interpreted as a threat against a protected individual, though officials declined to provide details about security measures. The incident comes amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran and follows other threats directed at President Trump and members of his family, while tensions have also escalated economically after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced additional efforts to isolate Iran by warning foreign governments and businesses that continued dealings with Tehran could jeopardize their access to the U.S. financial system.

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

Kiss Me Day

Kiss Me Day is that little calendar gremlin that shows up and dares society to turn basic affection into a public performance, like we all signed a waiver at the door. It’s not about romance so much as momentum: somebody’s got mint gum, somebody’s got audacity, and everybody else is doing the math on whether “it’s the holiday” counts as consent or just poor planning. The whole thing runs on two fuels—confidence and plausible deniability—and both are flammable. Keep it classy if you can, keep it legal if you’re smart, and if you can’t manage either, at least keep your mouth to yourself.
