Statewide Honor Coming To Longtime Indian Temple Mound Museum Volunteer

City Of Fort Walton Beach— John Jansen, a longtime volunteer at Fort Walton Beach’s Heritage Park & Cultural Center and Indian Temple Mound Museum, is being recognized for 50 years of service with the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s 2026 Individual Volunteer Service Award. Jansen’s connection to the museum began as a teenager in the 1970s, when his interest in Native American pottery led him to teach himself traditional pottery-making techniques. Over the decades, he has contributed to the museum in numerous ways, including serving as a guide, demonstrator, and speaker, creating historically accurate artifacts and displays, helping maintain the grounds, and assisting with hurricane recovery and recent museum renovations. His continued involvement with organizations dedicated to Native American history and culture has made him an important part of the local heritage community. Jansen will receive the statewide award at the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s annual conference in Orlando on September 2, 2026.

Byron Donalds Announces Sen. Avila As Running Mate

WEAR TV3— Republican Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds announced state Sen. Bryan Avila of Miami Springs as his running mate during a news conference at Miami’s Freedom Tower on Tuesday. Avila, a Cuban American and Florida Army National Guard veteran, will run alongside Donalds as the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. During his remarks, Avila highlighted his family’s history of fleeing communist Cuba and emphasized conservative priorities, including parental rights, affordability, and opposition to socialism. He also pointed to his experience responding to hurricanes and other emergencies as an example of the practical leadership he believes is needed in Florida. Donalds, who has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, has made reducing housing and insurance costs and preparing younger Floridians for future economic opportunities key elements of his campaign.

Council To Discuss 2027 Fiscal Year Budget Tonight In Special Meeting

City Of Fort Walton Beach— The Fort Walton Beach City Council will discuss the proposed FY 2026–27 city budget, which totals $65.09 million—about $156,700 (0.24%) less than the originally approved FY 2025–26 budget. The proposed budget is based on a revised maximum property-tax rate of 4.6801 mills, down from the previously approved 5.6900 mills after a change in state law. City staff says the budget complies with the city charter and Charter Amendment Ordinance 2145 and is seeking direction from council before the budget moves forward. The meeting also includes several broader policy and operational discussions. Council members will consider restructuring the library, potentially privatizing the golf course, and consolidating the Police Department. Other topics include potentially outsourcing sports providers, expanding CPR training for residents, and discussions about several city properties, including the parking lot at 164 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, a portion of the Tennis Center property at 45 W. Audrey Drive NW, and the former Elder Services Building at 215 Hospital Road NE. These items appear to be discussion and direction items rather than final decisions at this stage.
