Choctaw Drops Season Opener, Will Host Auburn Next Friday

Max Preps— Choctawhatchee opened the season with a 15-13 loss to Mosley on Thursday night in Lynn Haven. The Indians will look to bounce back next Friday, Aug. 28, at home against Auburn at 7 p.m with live, play by play coverage on 94.3 FTW and streaming at 943FTW.com.

Scallops Are Back In Choctawhatchee Bay?!?

Get The Coast— The annual Great Scallop Count in Choctawhatchee Bay provided the first confirmed evidence of bay scallops in the area in several years, with 29 volunteers collecting more than 200 scallop shells during the survey. However, all of the shells were empty, and no live scallops were found, suggesting the small population documented just weeks earlier may have experienced a recent die-off. Researchers say the findings are still encouraging because they show the bay can support scallops, while follow-up surveys will help determine whether any survived and identify conditions affecting their population.

Sinkhole Emerges Along 98 In FWB Near Marine Max

WEAR TV3— A sinkhole formed Thursday on U.S. Highway 98 at Third Avenue in Fort Walton Beach after a vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant, damaging a water main beneath the roadway. The incident forced the closure of the outside eastbound lane, and police urged drivers to avoid the area, use alternate routes, and expect possible delays while crews addressed the damage.

Three Arrested, Drugs Seized in Fort Walton Beach Retail Theft Investigation

City Of Fort Walton Beach— A retail theft investigation in Fort Walton Beach led to three arrests and the seizure of suspected narcotics after police responded to a reported shoplifting incident at Academy Sports + Outdoors on Mary Esther Cut Off on August 18. Investigators later stopped the suspects on U.S. Highway 98 and determined that Meredith Ann Fuller allegedly attempted to steal about $628 worth of clothing, while Charles Jefferson Posey was accused of knowing about the theft; during the investigation, officers also recovered suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and fentanyl from the suspects and their vehicle. Fuller faces multiple charges, Eric John Gonzalez was charged with possession of a controlled substance, and Posey received a notice to appear for petty theft.

FWB City Council To Meet On Tuesday

City Of Fort Walton Beach— Fort Walton Beach City Council and Community Redevelopment Agency members will meet Tuesday, Aug. 25, at City Hall for two public meetings. The CRA Board meeting begins at 4 p.m., followed by the City Council meeting at 6 p.m.; both meetings are open to the public and will be held in the City Council Chamber at 107 Miracle Strip Parkway SW.

Former Bama Basketball Player Awarded Over $9 Million In Lawsuit

FoxNews— An Alabama jury has ordered The New York Times to pay $9.25 million to former University of Alabama basketball player Kai Spears, finding the newspaper defamed him in a 2023 story about a fatal shooting. Spears was an 18-year-old freshman walk-on when the Times wrongly reported that he was in a car at the scene of the shooting that killed 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Spears wasn't there — the person was later identified as team student manager Cooper Lee. The Times reporter relied largely on anonymous sources, including one who said the person was a “White guy on the basketball team” but couldn't remember his name. On the witness stand, the reporter acknowledged, “Yes, [the story] had a mistake, no question.” The Times eventually corrected the story and said it regretted the error, but that came after Spears filed his lawsuit. Following a nine-day trial, the jury sided with Spears. The Times says the mistake was an honest one and is considering its legal options. According to the newspaper, this is the first defamation lawsuit it has lost in the U.S. over one of its articles in more than 50 years.
