Hinely And Evanchyk Win Reelection For Okaloosa School Board

Get The Coast— Linda Evanchyk and Brett Hinely won their respective Okaloosa County School Board races Tuesday night. Evanchyk, the board’s current chairman and a retired teacher with 38 years of classroom experience, defeated challenger Mitch Reed in District 3 with 51.48% of the vote, earning a third term. In District 5, Hinely defeated Cynthia West with 59.46% of the vote, securing a full four-year term after previously being appointed to the seat in 2024. A Niceville businessman and Air Force veteran, Hinely has also served as the board’s construction representative, overseeing projects such as the new Pineview K-8 school in Crestview and the Destin Elementary expansion. Both races were nonpartisan.

FWB Chamber's Dog Daze To Return In October

Get The Coast— The Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Dog Daze celebration on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Landing, 139 Brooks St. S.E. The free, family-friendly event invites residents to bring their dogs for a day of pet-friendly contests, local vendors, specialty products, and activities, with water stations available throughout the event. Drawing nearly 800 dogs each year, Dog Daze has become a popular gathering for Emerald Coast pet owners and the community. Dogs attending should be at least six months old and current on vaccinations. Vendor opportunities are also still available through the Chamber.

Okaloosa County, Crestview Partner On New Animal Control Agreement

Get The Coast— Okaloosa County commissioners have unanimously approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Crestview to provide animal control and sheltering services in the unincorporated areas of north Okaloosa County, with the county and city sharing operational costs equally. The partnership will begin Sept. 22, when the county’s long-standing contract with the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society ends, and services will initially operate under a limited model before expanding to Crestview’s more comprehensive level of care as staffing, equipment and a new shelter are established. The two governments plan to renovate a 7,500-square-foot city-owned building on Long Drive into a new animal shelter, with estimated costs between $750,000 and $1.25 million; the county will cover 65% of the renovation while Crestview contributes the land and building and pays 35% of the costs. Officials expect the arrangement to reduce the county’s annual animal-control expenses, while the agreement also includes the use of county inmates to assist at the shelter and the transfer of a used county pickup truck to Crestview. The initial agreement will run for three years, followed by automatic one-year renewals, pending consideration by the Crestview City Council.

Higher Fire Assessment Fees Approved For Holley-Navarre Fire District

WEAR TV3— Santa Rosa County voters approved higher fire assessment fees for the Holley-Navarre Fire District, with 57% supporting the referendum in Tuesday’s election. The additional revenue will increase the district’s annual budget from nearly $4 million to about $6 million and help boost firefighter pay, which currently stands at $15.33 per hour. Under the approved measure, residents will pay an average of about $68 more per year, while businesses will see their fees increase by nearly $100.

National Potato Day

National Potato Day is that glorious calendar prank where we all pretend a dirt-grown lump needs its own spotlight, like it didn’t already run half the world’s comfort food economy from the shadows. It’s a tribute to the one ingredient that shows up uninvited, fixes dinner, and somehow gets credit for being “humble” while it’s absolutely carrying your entire personality in the form of fries, chips, and suspiciously addictive tots. People celebrate by posting brown ovals online and acting like they’ve discovered agriculture, which is fine—everybody needs a hobby that doesn’t involve arguing with strangers. Consider this your official permission slip to eat something fried and call it tradition, because if we’re going to honor a potato, we’re doing it in grease and denial.
