Two FWB Fire Fighters Honored By PAWS

City Of Fort Walton Beach— Fort Walton Beach firefighters Captain Sam Signer and Firefighter David "Leo" Leonard were recognized with Animal Lifesaving Awards from the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) after rescuing two dogs from a smoke-filled home during a July 22 house fire on Rainbow Drive. The C-shift crew, assisted by neighboring fire departments, quickly extinguished the fire, and no residents were home at the time of the incident. City officials also recognized the entire C-shift for their teamwork and dedication to protecting both residents and their pets.

Commissioners Choose To Cut SRO Funding By $500K

Get The Coast— Okaloosa County commissioners voted to reduce the county’s contribution to the School Resource Officer program by $500,000 while continuing discussions about how the program should be funded. Officials said the county has paid more than $25 million toward school security since 2018 and argued that state Safe Schools funding has shifted more of the financial burden away from the school district. Some commissioners supported lowering the county’s share to create a more balanced partnership, while others emphasized the importance of maintaining strong school safety. The funding decision comes as county leaders work to balance budget priorities while preserving security in local schools.

Qualifying Error Delays District 1 Election For School Board

The Destin Log— Okaloosa County voters will not see the School Board District 1 race on the Aug. 18 primary ballot after election officials determined that no candidates had officially qualified for the contest, leaving the seat to be filled through a future special election. The issue stems from qualifying paperwork deficiencies that prevented the race from moving forward as originally planned, despite earlier expectations that the seat would be contested. County election officials said additional details, including the timing of the special election, will be announced once the process is finalized.

Former OCSO Deputy Testifies In Murder Trial Hearing

WEAR TV3— Former Okaloosa County deputy Eddie Duran testified during a court hearing seeking dismissal of the manslaughter charge stemming from the 2024 fatal shooting of Senior Airman Roger Fortson.
