The news we couldn't ignore if we tried

City Of FWB Announces FREE August Large Item Pick-Up

City Of Fort Walton BeachThe City of Fort Walton Beach will offer free curbside collection of large household items throughout August as part of its Neighborhood Cleanup program. Residential sanitation customers can place bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, appliances, and grills at the curb on their regular yard waste collection day without scheduling a special pickup, and the usual four-cubic-yard limit will be waived for the month. The program does not accept construction debris, concrete, bricks, glass, tires, or hazardous materials, and it is available only to residents within the city limits who receive city sanitation service.

Okaloosa School District Clarifies Safe Schools Funding During SRO Debate

Get The CoastThe Okaloosa County School District is clarifying how Florida’s Safe Schools funding is used after questions arose during a county debate over school resource officer (SRO) funding. District officials said the state allocation is intended to support a wide range of school safety needs—including SROs, campus security improvements, mental health services, emergency preparedness, and safety technology—and cannot simply replace the district’s financial commitment to law enforcement officers. They emphasized that Safe Schools funding is restricted by state law, does not fully cover the cost of school safety programs, and is combined with local funding sources to maintain comprehensive security measures for students and staff.

Hiker Impaled By Pole Treks 10 Miles To Safety

Get The CoastA Montana man survived a remarkable hiking accident after slipping near the summit of Granite Peak and falling onto a trekking pole that pierced his body, entering below his left arm and exiting through his lower back while narrowly missing vital organs. Drawing on his experience as an emergency room nurse, he assessed that the injury was not immediately life-threatening, used a satellite communication device to notify authorities, and then hiked for about 6½ hours—roughly 10 miles—back to the trailhead with the support of his friends. Surgeons later successfully removed the pole, and once he has fully recovered, he plans to return and attempt the climb again.

Ask Uncle Bobby

Bad advice for good people.

As heard on the B-Team Morning Show

Each weekday, some poor soul writes in for help. Uncle Bobby gives them the worst advice we can legally put on the air.

July 28 · Today's Letter

Dear Uncle Bobby,

I feel drained by constant invitations and social expectations. Do I actually have to keep showing up, or is it okay to start backing out and disconnecting?

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

National Hamburger Day

National Hamburger Day is that annual moment when we all pretend a ground-beef disc on a sponge bun is a cultural institution instead of a convenient way to eat with one hand and regret with the other. It’s celebrated by restaurants slashing prices, people posting photos like they just discovered fire, and your arteries quietly filing a formal complaint. Somewhere, a grill gets lit, a cheese slice achieves its final form, and a pickle gets displaced like it owes somebody money. Don’t worry—this isn’t the punchline, it’s the opening ceremony for a holiday built on beef, bargains, and bad decisions you’ll defend with full confidence.
