Destin City Council Tables Proposed Annexation

Get The Coast— The Destin City Council unanimously voted to table a proposal to involuntarily annex approximately 2,076 acres of unincorporated land following a standing-room-only public hearing where residents voiced strong opposition. The proposed annexation would have included neighborhoods such as Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay, Diamond Lakes, Indian Lakes, and Destin Commons, affecting more than 4,400 residents and over 2,400 homes. While Mayor Bobby Wagner said the goal was to explore opportunities for improved services, grant funding, and more efficient city boundaries, many residents expressed concerns about higher property taxes, increased costs, and losing local control without clear benefits. Several council members acknowledged the overwhelming public opposition, with one stating he would not support the measure now or in the future. The council ultimately voted to table the ordinance, halting further city action on the proposal unless directed otherwise, though Wagner said he plans to continue meeting with residents informally to discuss the issue.

FWB Man Looking At 10 Years For Indictment

WEAR TV3— A 35-year-old Fort Walton Beach man, Aubrey Darnell Joseph Sr., has been indicted in federal court on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl. Joseph appeared for his arraignment in Pensacola, and his trial is scheduled for Aug. 3. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in prison on each count. The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Gulf Coast High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force.

UWF Finds Artifacts More Than 1,000 Years Old

WEAR TV3— Archaeologists and students from the University of West Florida have uncovered Native American artifacts more than 1,000 years old during a required archaeological survey ahead of infrastructure work for the university’s new football stadium. The excavation relocated a previously documented site and revealed pottery and ceramics linked to multiple pre-Columbian cultures, including the Weeden Island culture, dating from about A.D. 600 to 900, and the later Mississippian period. Researchers believe the area served as a seasonal campsite used by Native families over several centuries, and they say the remarkably undisturbed site offers a rare opportunity to better understand the history and cultural connections of Indigenous communities in the Florida Panhandle while providing valuable hands-on experience for archaeology students.

AI Company Sued For Copyright Of Authors

Newser— A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement requiring artificial intelligence company Anthropic to compensate authors and publishers after using pirated copies of their books to train its Claude chatbot. Under the agreement, rights holders will receive about $3,000 per book, with authors or publishers having already claimed roughly 91% of the more than 428,000 books included in the settlement. The judge said the class-action agreement provides meaningful relief to those affected. The deal is considered the largest copyright recovery in history and marks the first major settlement among the many lawsuits challenging the use of copyrighted works to train AI systems.
