Okaloosa County Now Exploring New Sales Tax To Replace Potential Loss Of Property Tax

Get The CoastCommissioners in Okaloosa County are considering whether a one-cent local sales tax could eventually replace or reduce homestead property taxes if Florida moves toward eliminating them. During a recent workshop, officials discussed the idea as a possible way to maintain funding for essential county services, noting that a sales tax would generate revenue from both residents and the millions of visitors who come to the area each year rather than relying primarily on homeowners. County leaders emphasized that the concept is still in the exploratory stage, would require voter approval, and is intended to prepare for potential changes in state property tax policy while ensuring long-term funding for infrastructure, public safety, and other local services.

Okaloosa County Clears Hurdle For Purchase Of Dowd Park

Get The CoastOkaloosa County commissioners have given final approval to move forward with the purchase of the future Dowd Park property near the Shalimar Bridge after completing months of due diligence and confirming that all conditions of the agreement were met. The county will acquire the 1.7-acre waterfront parcel on Garnier’s Bayou, preserving it as a public park in partnership with the Town of Shalimar. Plans for the park include recreational amenities and scenic public access to the waterfront, with funding shared through county tourism development dollars, the town, and state appropriations. The project is intended to expand public green space while honoring longtime county attorney John R. Dowd Sr.

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

National Corn Fritter Day

National Corn Fritter Day is that annual moment when society looks at a perfectly respectable ear of corn and says, “You know what this needs? Oil. Chaos. A batter-based cover story.” It’s a holiday for people who want their vegetables to stop acting superior and start showing up like they owe somebody money, hot and crispy and a little suspicious. Nobody’s pretending this makes sense—we’re just honoring the sacred American tradition of deep-frying optimism and calling it culture. So clear your schedule, lower your standards, and prepare to celebrate the kind of comfort food that tastes like a county fair and decisions you’ll defend loudly.
