FWB Council Meets Tonight - Recap From Last Week's Budget Workshop

Get The CoastAt a June 16 budget workshop, the Fort Walton Beach City Council reviewed options to address a roughly $500,000 budget gap and prepare for a potential $1.7 million revenue loss if a proposed state homestead exemption passes. Council members discussed outsourcing youth sports, daycare/aftercare, and senior programs to outside providers to reduce operating costs while keeping services available, tentatively preserving funding for fireworks, concerts, and the Billy Bowlegs parade. They also debated continued support for local economic and community organizations, rejected eliminating library services while exploring a future public-private redevelopment concept for the library site, and considered new revenue ideas such as higher recreation center fees, boat ramp charges, and better management of city-owned properties. Other topics included moving utility billing to a fully online system, conducting overdue utility rate studies, and selling surplus properties to help cover future debt obligations. The council decisively rejected a proposal to reinstate a fire assessment fee for businesses, opting instead to seek other funding sources for fire department needs, while also discussing possible changes to the city’s voter-approved spending cap and the treatment of enterprise-fund employees under that cap.

Is America's Love For Beer Going Flat?

Gulf Coast NewsAmerica’s long-standing preference for beer appears to be weakening, as beer sales dropped 3% last year and brewery production fell to its lowest level in a decade. Industry analysts attribute the decline to several factors, including growing consumer interest in non-alcoholic and THC-infused beverages, reduced attendance at bars, parties, and other social events where beer is commonly consumed, and changing lifestyle habits. At the same time, brewers are facing increased costs from inflation and tariffs, prompting many to raise prices even as overall production and demand continue to decline.

Ask Uncle Bobby

Bad advice for good people.

As heard on the B-Team Morning Show

Each weekday, some poor soul writes in for help. Uncle Bobby gives them the worst advice we can legally put on the air.

June 24 · Today's Letter

Dear Uncle Bobby,

I host dinner parties that feel boring and predictable, and I want to make them more memorable. How can I revive my social life by using subtle passive-aggressive moves without things turning into a full argument?

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

Let It Go Day

Let It Go Day is that annual civic experiment where we all pretend we can set down one grudge, one bad habit, or one dusty emotional anvil and just… walk away like we’re not gonna circle back to it at 2:13 a.m. It’s not therapy, it’s not forgiveness, it’s basically spring cleaning for your brain—toss the junk, keep the good stuff, and somehow you still find three old receipts and a rage you forgot you owned. The idea is simple: stop gripping what’s strangling you, because your hands are tired and your blood pressure’s doing parkour. So today you let it go—whatever “it” is—and if you can’t, that’s fine too; just don’t act surprised when it follows you into next week like a stray cat with your address.
