What We're Talking About

The news we couldn't ignore if we tried

FHSAA State Tournaments Will Now Look Very Different In 11 Sports

Get The CoastThe Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has unanimously approved a new Open Division playoff format that will begin in the 2026–27 school year across 11 sports, including football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, flag football, and lacrosse. The division will feature the top eight teams in the state regardless of classification, selected through MaxPreps rankings and FHSAA power rankings. Teams will be split into two four-team pools, with each team guaranteed at least one home game during pool play. The top two teams from each pool will then advance to a single-elimination state finals tournament to determine the Open Division champion. FHSAA officials say the goal is to create a premier championship pathway for Florida’s strongest programs while preserving traditional state championships in existing classifications. The change could significantly alter postseason opportunities for several Northwest Florida programs, with schools such as South Walton, Niceville, Choctaw, and Fort Walton Beach potentially seeing different routes to state title contention under the new system.

How Much Money Americans DON'T Have in the Bank

Yahoo FinanceA new report found the typical American household has about $8,000 in the bank, but balances vary widely by age. Americans under 35 have a median of $5,400, while savings generally rise with age, peaking at $13,400 for those 65 to 74 before dipping slightly for older retirees. Couples and college graduates tend to have the most money saved, while single adults and those with less education have significantly lower bank balances.

Portion Control Seems To Be An Issue

Psychology TodayAmericans are eating about 23% more calories than they did in the 1970s. Back then, the average person consumed around 2,000 calories a day. Today it's closer to 2,500. People aren't overeating because they suddenly have less self-control. Instead, we're surrounded by things that make eating easier and more tempting than ever before: Portions are much bigger than they used to be. Food is available almost everywhere, all the time. Restaurants and fast-food chains serve larger meals. Highly processed foods are designed to be extra tasty and hard to stop eating. Constant food advertising and food images keep triggering cravings, even when we're not hungry. Researchers say our brains evolved for a world where food was scarce. Now we're living in a world overflowing with cheap, convenient, calorie-dense food, and our brains haven't caught up.

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

Superman Day

Superman Day is that annual moment when grown adults pretend a guy in tights and good intentions is the moral compass we all totally follow the other 364 days. It’s a celebration of truth, justice, and the eternal fantasy that problems can be solved by showing up on time, standing up straight, and not tweeting through your feelings. People rewatch movies, buy merch, argue about which actor “gets it,” and briefly consider being decent before remembering they have errands. It’s absurd, sure—but it’s also a neat little reminder that hope sells, capes bill, and everybody wants to believe their best self is only one dramatic entrance away.
