FWB Council Declines To Seek Proposal For Dispatch From OCSO

Get The CoastThe Fort Walton Beach City Council voted 4–3 against requesting a proposal from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office for full-time dispatch services, ending—for now—consideration of a possible dispatch consolidation. Supporters, including Councilmembers David Schmidt, Bryce Jeter, and Payne Walker, argued that seeking a proposal was simply a fact-finding step to evaluate potential savings as the city faces budget pressures from proposed property tax changes and spending caps. Opponents, including Debi Riley, Ben Merrell, Logan Browning, and Gloria DeBerry, contended that the move was premature, could undermine employee morale, and risk weakening city services. Discussion also centered on potential impacts to dispatch employees’ pensions, operational challenges such as after-hours utility dispatching, and the city’s investment in its dispatch system. With the motion failing, city staff will not pursue a formal proposal from the Sheriff’s Office, and the council will instead continue broader budget discussions at upcoming workshops.

Navarre HBTS Residents Upset With Broken Mailboxes And Speeders

WEAR TV3Residents along a sharp curve on PGA Boulevard in Navarre say speeding drivers have repeatedly damaged mailboxes, torn up lawns, and even crashed into private property for years. Homeowners report that many motorists ignore the 15-mph speed limit, particularly at night, and believe faded road markings contribute to the problem. Some residents have experienced multiple vehicles entering their yards and have installed their own visual barriers to help drivers stay on the roadway. Others are calling for additional traffic-calming measures, such as more speed bumps or a three-way stop, but Santa Rosa County officials say speed tables cannot be safely installed due to limited visibility on the curve. The county has indicated that roadway striping improvements may be considered as funding becomes available and has asked the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office to increase patrols in the area to address speeding concerns.

Delta Flight Lands Early After Passenger Slaps Flight Attendant On Rear

The IndependentA Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles was diverted to Atlanta after a passenger, identified by federal prosecutors as Cody James Maluck, allegedly slapped a flight attendant on the buttocks during beverage service. Authorities say the attendant had unintentionally skipped Maluck’s drink order because he appeared to be asleep, and shortly afterward she felt a forceful slap that caused her body to move forward. Another flight attendant reported hearing a yell and seeing her colleague lurch forward as though she had been struck. The pilot diverted the plane to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where Atlanta police detained Maluck before the FBI assumed the investigation. According to prosecutors, Maluck admitted to touching the flight attendant but disputed claims that the contact was forceful enough to push her forward.

Today's Holidays

Holiday #1 of 4

National German Chocolate Cake Day

National German Chocolate Cake Day is that annual reminder that America will slap “National” on anything with sugar and a halfway decent backstory, then demand you celebrate it like it’s a civic duty. It’s not even German, which is perfect, because nothing says “holiday” like a lie you can eat with a fork. You’re supposed to honor the gooey, nutty, coconut-laden brick that tastes like somebody dared a brownie to become a casserole and it said yes. So clear your schedule, loosen your morals, and pretend this is about tradition—not the fact that frosting is cheaper than therapy.
