Golf Cart Neighborhoods: Pay Attention!

Get The CoastThe Walton County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents and visitors to follow low-speed vehicle (LSV) safety laws after two crashes involving LSVs occurred within a 24-hour period in Walton County. Officials said the incidents highlight ongoing concerns about unsafe operation of golf carts and street-legal LSVs, particularly on roads where they are not permitted. Deputies reminded drivers that LSVs are only allowed on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less, operators must have a valid driver’s license, and all passengers must wear seat belts. The sheriff’s office emphasized that ignoring these rules can lead to serious injuries or fatalities and said enforcement efforts will continue as traffic increases during the busy season.

According to the South Walton Fire District, witnesses saw the man struggling while attempting to swim to a set of buoys located between the first and second sandbars near the Whale’s Tail area. Bystanders entered the Gulf to help and began providing care until lifeguards, sheriff’s deputies, and emergency crews arrived and took over lifesaving efforts. The man was transported to a local hospital, while officials noted that single red flags were flying at the time, signaling dangerous surf and rip current conditions, although authorities do not believe a rip current directly caused the incident.

Mysterious Un-Lit Pilings Show Up Near Channel In Choctawhatchee Bay

WEAR TV3Boaters in Choctawhatchee Bay are raising safety concerns over several metal pilings connected to the Brooks Bridge replacement project that they say are difficult to see at night and could pose a serious hazard on the water. The temporary pilings, used to secure construction barges, reportedly lack adequate lighting and are not clearly marked on many navigation systems, prompting worries from local boaters who frequently travel through the area after dark. The Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard said they are working with contractors to improve visibility by upgrading the lighting system, while the Coast Guard has also issued safety alerts over marine radio channels. Officials noted the structures are temporary and will be removed once construction on the bridge project is completed.

Florida: Where You May Withstand a Daily Golf Ball Barrage

WPTVA South Florida family living beside Westchester Country Club near Boynton Beach says stray golf balls from the course have become a constant danger, causing property damage and raising serious safety concerns. Homeowner Joao Loyola says golf balls regularly land in their yard, breaking his car windshield, damaging fencing, and even injuring his wife badly enough to leave bruises. The family, who has young twins, says they fear going outside and have already spent thousands on taller fencing and protective netting, though the problem continues. Neighbors have reportedly experienced similar issues, including broken windows and other damage. In response, the country club noted that the golf course was established before the homes were built and said golfers would be reminded to use caution, but the family believes more permanent solutions—such as redesigning the hole or installing stronger barriers—are necessary.

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

Paper Clip Day

Paper Clip Day is that annual reminder that civilization is being held together by a bent piece of wire and mutual denial. We pretend it’s about “organization,” but it’s really about control—tiny, quiet, office-supply control—pinning your messy little life to a stack of paper like it’s evidence in a trial you’re definitely losing. Folks celebrate by hoarding clips in drawers, straightening the ones that should’ve been put down humanely, and acting like stationery is a personality. Stay tuned, because if your emotional stability depends on a 3-cent metal squiggle, I’ve got questions—and unfortunately, I’m hosting the show.
