FL Congresswoman Resigns After Her Fraud Was Exposed

WPTV— Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress just as lawmakers were preparing to determine potential sanctions in a major ethics case. After a two-year investigation, a House Ethics Committee found she had committed 25 violations, including breaches of campaign finance laws, tied to allegations that roughly $5 million in COVID relief funds connected to her family’s healthcare business were improperly used to support her 2022 campaign. As lawmakers considered penalties ranging from a reprimand or fine to possible expulsion—which was gaining support—she stepped down before any formal action, arguing the process was unfair and that she lacked sufficient time to mount a defense.

Morgan Re-Appointed To Destin City Council

Get The Coast— The Destin City Council voted Monday night to appoint former councilmember Chatham Morgan to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Torey Geile earlier this month, with Morgan set to be sworn in on May 4 and serve until a permanent replacement is elected Nov. 3. Chosen from a field of 11 applicants, Morgan was nominated by Jim Bagby and seconded by Teresa Hebert, who emphasized his prior council experience from 2016 to 2021 and familiarity with the city’s budget process as key advantages ahead of the upcoming budget season. Morgan, who has also previously filled an interim role, expressed enthusiasm about returning to serve, while councilmember Dewey Destin praised all applicants as qualified. Although Bobby Wagner does not vote unless breaking a tie, he noted he would have supported applicant John Stephens for his dedication to attending meetings. Council leaders also encouraged the remaining candidates to run in November or pursue advisory roles, highlighting increased civic interest compared to past elections, and noted that the appointment follows city charter requirements, as explained by City Attorney Kim Kopp, which mandate filling vacancies by appointment when less than a year remains before the next election.

Racism? No, Just Good 'Ol Southern Corruption

CNBC— The Department of Justice announced Tuesday an 11-count fraud indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center, alleging the group secretly funded leaders and members of white supremacist and extremist organizations it publicly opposed. Filed in federal court in Montgomery, Alabama, the charges include six counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, and one count of money laundering, with prosecutors claiming that between 2014 and 2023 the SPLC paid at least $3 million to eight individuals tied to groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and others, effectively enabling the very extremism it denounced. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche alleged that some paid informants actively promoted racist activity, including one linked to planning the Unite the Right rally, while Kash Patel stood alongside him and has previously criticized the organization. The SPLC acknowledged it is under investigation but defended its use of confidential informants as a life-saving effort to monitor violent groups, with interim CEO Bryan Fair calling the allegations false and pledging to vigorously fight the charges while continuing its mission against hate and extremism.
