What We're Talking About

The news we couldn't ignore if we tried

Americans Judge Fellow Americans Harshly

Pew ResearchAmericans tend to judge one another more harshly than people in many other countries. In a global survey of 25 nations, the United States was the only country where a majority of respondents believed their fellow citizens have poor morals. About 53% of Americans said other Americans are morally bad, compared with 47% who said they have good morals. Political divisions strongly influence this view: Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say other Americans lack morals, but members of both parties increasingly see people on the opposing side as immoral.

Crestview Man Charged With Murder

WEAR TV3Authorities say a 20-year-old Crestview man, Kavari McQueen, has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting early Wednesday morning in Okaloosa County. According to the sheriff’s office, the victim—a 20-year-old man from Mary Esther—was found shortly before 6 a.m. in a roadway near Lake Silver Road north of Crestview with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators believe McQueen and the victim were together in a vehicle when an altercation broke out that led to gunfire, after which both men exited the vehicle and entered the roadway. A passing driver later discovered the victim’s body, while deputies say McQueen fled the scene in the vehicle. He was later identified as the suspect and arrested Wednesday evening in Tallahassee, and investigators also carried out a search warrant at a home in the Crestview area as part of the ongoing investigation. No additional details have been released.

HS Education Is Going To Pot

Wall Street JournalHigh schools across the United States are struggling to prevent marijuana use on campus, even during class. As more states legalize cannabis for adults, the drug has become easier for teenagers to obtain and more socially accepted, making it harder for schools to control. Administrators say many students now use cannabis through discreet methods such as vape pens or edible products like gummies in bathrooms, hallways, and sometimes even in classrooms without being noticed. Educators note that these newer products are small, odorless, and difficult to detect compared with traditional smoking. Researchers also warn that marijuana use among teens can negatively affect attention, memory, and academic performance, raising concerns for schools trying to keep students focused on learning.

March 11 · Today's Letter

Dear Uncle Bobby,

I keep finding out important news about friends and family through social media, usually long after everyone else already knows. It makes me feel out of the loop and embarrassed to ask questions after the fact. How do I handle this without seeming needy or bitter?

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

National Oreo Cookie Day

National Oreo Cookie Day is that annual moment when we all pretend a corporate sandwich cookie is a sacred tradition, like the Pilgrims brought it over on the Mayflower next to the smallpox and bad ideas. You’re expected to honor it the correct way: twist it, dunk it, stack it, or eat it straight from the sleeve like a person making “good choices” in real time. It’s not about nutrition, history, or even joy—it’s about permission, stamped in blue packaging, to behave like your inner child won the election. And today, we’re going to explore what that says about you, your pantry, and the fragile lie you call self-control.
