The news we couldn't ignore if we tried

Beware Of Scammers Impersonating Law Enforcement

WEAR TV3An Okaloosa County man lost $10,000 after falling victim to a phone scam in which a caller impersonated a sheriff’s office captain and claimed the man had multiple outstanding warrants requiring immediate payment. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says these scams rely on urgency and intimidation, affect people of all ages and professions, and often demand payment through hard-to-trace methods such as Cash App, cryptocurrency ATMs, or gift cards. In this case, the victim sent the money in two payments via Cash App and a Walmart kiosk. Authorities say scammers use publicly available information and increasingly AI technology to make the calls more convincing, but stress that law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest in this way. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to hang up and verify it by contacting the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 850-651-7400.

Bargaining for a Deal Becoming a Lost Art

QZ NewsAmericans are increasingly avoiding haggling, even for purchases like cars where negotiation was once expected, according to research from Indiana University showing that 95% of U.S. adults rarely try to negotiate unless the savings feel substantial. On average, consumers say a discount must be around 20% to 35% to justify the discomfort or effort, a reluctance that benefits retailers, who can raise prices 5% to 11% and still keep most customers from pushing back. Experts attribute the trend to fixed online pricing, limited authority among sales staff, reduced confidence when dealing with large companies, and a preference for speed over prolonged discussions, along with a broader mindset shift marked by fatigue and pessimism. While bargaining is becoming a forgotten skill, experts say consumers who want better deals can start small, prepare in advance, and remember that negotiation improves with practice.

Today's Holidays

Celebrate the weird stuff. We do.

Holiday #1 of 4

International Sweatpants Day

International Sweatpants Day is the one day a year where society collectively admits it gave up weeks ago. It's not a celebration, it's a confession—like wearing your hangover to brunch and calling it "cozy." The dress code is elasticated defeat, accessorized with shame crumbs and the quiet hum of dreams deferred. We used to have parades, now we have drawstrings—progress, if you squint hard enough.
